Phonics
At St Martin's CE Primary School we aim for all our children to become fluent, confident readers who are passionate about reading. We believe that reading is the key to unlocking the future for your child, therefore we encourage you to regularly read with your child at home.
In school, we deliver the Read Write Inc programme, to help to your child read at school. We encourage children to develop a love of books by giving them access to a wide range of books and dedicating the start and end of every day to reading.
What is Read Write Inc?
Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics complete literacy programme which helps our children, between 4-7, to learn to read fluently and at speed, so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. Where children above 7 need additional support, we continue teaching RWI phonics to them.
RWI was developed by Ruth Miskin and more information on this can be found at https://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/parents-copy-2/
How will RWI be taught?
All children are assessed regularly by our RWI leader and then grouped accordingly, this allows them to make This allows complete participation in lessons.

Reading is at the heart of our curriculum, as we believe that our being a confident reader not only provides children with fundamental life skills but also teaches them valuable lessons. We ensure that children are exposed to a wide range of high-quality texts through school through our thoughtfully planned reading curriculum. We teach our reading through 'Reading Workshop' which allows children to study a book as a class, while developing the key skills of reading.
